BUY ONE BOOK AND READ IT CHALLENGE

I was over at Beth's place, Beth Fish Reads, and found this reading challenge. I thought I would try it out. It is over at My Friend Amy.

This is what Amy has to say about this challenge:

"We live in a culture so saturated with choice that the past time of reading a novel seems to be falling by the wayside. There are many Americans who don't even read a single book in the span of a year. Books, once considered to be recession proof, are facing the same economic troubles as everyone else."

"This challenge is designed to encourage you to rediscover the joy of reading, while supporting the authors who bring us books."

There are two levels or choices for this challenge. Because a lot of people who read this blog are voracious readers, I have added a new level this year.

1) The first option is to simply buy one book and read it. The book you buy and read should be a book you have chosen for yourself for pleasure. It should not be work related and books read to your children do not count.

2) The second option is to buy one book a month and read it. I am asking that those of you who will probably already have one book read by January 2 choose this option. Books can be on your other challenge lists, it is only necessary that you buy them and read them!

The challenge will end December 31, 2009. I will post a Mr. Linky for reviews on January 1st. If you plan to join in, please leave a comment and please consider spreading the word about this challenge...especially among your non-bookish friends. At the conclusion of the chalenge, I will draw a winner from each pool of participants to win a 10 dollar Amazon gift card.

Happy Book Buying and Reading!

In answer to the question about if you can read TBR books....I think the books should be bought in 2009, since part of the goal of this challenge is to promote the book industry, however, I'll make a concession that three of the books you read can be books bought prior to 2009.

My List So Far:

January - Bones - Jonathan Kellerman
February - The Pagan Stone - Nora Roberts
March - The Senator's Wife - Sue Miller
April - Betrayal - Carla Neggers
May - The Lightning Thief - Rick Riordan

MUSING MONDAY

Do you keep track of what and/or how many books you read? How long have you been doing this? What's your favorite tracking method, and why?If you don't keep track, why not? (question courtesy of MizB)

Yes, I keep track of my books I read. Here at my blog and I also have a diary. I list all my books and when I finish them I mark them out. I also have them on my hard drive on my computer. Which is my favorite? I think the diary is my favorite. I can actually see the progress I am making. That is where I keep track of my reading challenges. The one on my hard drive just has the book covers and the names of the books. My diary has them listed by challenge. I think I am going to try and put all my books into a database on my hard drive. But haven't gotten around to that yet. Maybe this summer when I am off work.

THE SWISS FAMILY ROBINGSON

This is for my reading challenge, Childhood Favorites Reading Challenge.

The Swiss Family Robinson - Johann David Wyss

Product Description(from Amazon.Com)

Swept off course by a raging storm, a Swiss pastor, his wife, and four young sons are shipwrecked on an uncharted tropical island. Thus begins the classic story of survival and adventure that has fired the imaginations of readers since it first appeared in 1812.

This is such a wonderful book! It brought back lots of childhood memories for me. It amazed me when I was a child and it amazed me again as an adult. How this family, all alone on an island manages to survive and flourish, and keep up their spirits. Some of the things that happen is really hard to believe and all the things they find to survive is even more amazing.
If you haven't read this book you really should! It really makes me wonder if it is based on a true story or all make believe. I really would like to believe it's real!!

WEEKLY GEEKS

Over at Weekly Geeks this week they have several questions to ponder. You get to choose which one you want to post about. They are discussing Historical Fiction. That is, contemporary novels with a historical setting. This is the question I have decided to do this week.

"Is there a particular era that you love reading about? Tell us about it--give us a book list, if you'd like. Include pictures or some fun facts from that time period, maybe link to a website that focuses on that time. Educate us."

Actually I like reading about most history. That was my favorite subject in school. I went surfing around the internet to find what I was looking for. My period of Historical Fiction is set in England. I love reading about kings, queens,knights,lords and ladies.

What is Historical Fiction anyway? I've always wanted to know that. So went looking for some explanations on this. I found this info here:

"Historical fiction books tell us fiction based stories with a historical background or historical figures or historical events. Historical fiction books can be"

* novels
* short stories

Criteria for selecting historical fiction books
The historical fiction books should:

* present a wellknit story that doesn't conflict with historical records
* portray the characters realistically
* present authentic settings
* present historical facts
* provide accurate information through illustrations
* avoid stereotypes and myths

I went to Amazon.Com to look up some books of Historical Fiction. Here is a little list I made up. Now i am going to have to read them!

White Rose Rebel - Janet Paisley
Meet the female "Braveheart" in this vibrantly imagined, rousingly atmospheric and impeccably researched novel of Jacobite Scotland

The Winter Rose - Jennifer Donnelly
It has been twelve years since a dark, murderous figure stalked the alleys and courts of Whitechapel. And yet, in the summer of 1900, East London is still poor, still brutal, still a shadow city to its western twin. Among the reformers is an idealistic young woman named India Selwyn-Jones, recently graduated from medical school.

The Secret Lion - C. W. Gortner
In this rousing historical adventure set in the Tudor court, we are swept back to the final days of Edward VI's reign, and a time of danger, deceit, and courage

Lady of the Roses - Sandra Worth
During her short time as a ward in Queen Marguerite's Lancastrian court, fifteen-year-old Isobel has had many suitors ask for her hand, but the spirited beauty is blind to all but Yorkist Sir John Neville. It is nothing short of a miracle when the Queen allows Isobel's marriage to the enemy, albeit at a hefty price.

A TREASUREY OF PETER RABBIT AND OTHER STORIES

This is for th Childhood Favorites Reading Challenge.

"A Treasury of Peter Rabbit and Other Stories" by Beatrix Potter

This book has several stories. One being The Tale of Peter Rabbit.
The story begins,
Once upon a time there were four little Rabbits, and their names were - Flopsy,
Mopsy,
Cotton-tail,
and Peter,
Peter gets in all kinds of trouble when he goes to Mr. McGregor's garden. He loses his suit of clothes and his shoes. He also gets all wet when he hides in a watering can. He does eventually get out of the garden and goes back home to his mother.

"The Tail of Benjamin Bunny" is the next story in this book. The story begins,

One morning a little rabbit sat on a bank.
He pricked his ears and listened to the trit-trot, trit-trot of a pony.
A gig was coming along the road; it was driven by Mr. McGregor, and beside him sat Mrs.
McGregor in her best bonnet.

Benjamin and Peter have gone back to Mr. McGregor's garden to get Peters clothes. They get trapped under a basket with a cat sitting on top. Old Mr. Bunny comes along and saves Benjamin and Peter by trapping the cat in the greenhouse. Old Mr. Bunny takes Benjamin out of the basket by his ears and whipped him with a little switch, takes Peter out and the handkerchief with the onions.

"The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin"

This is a Tale about a tail - a tail that belonged to a little red squirrel, and his name was Nutkin.

Nukin and the other squirrels went to Owl Island to get some nuts. They took some mice as an offering for Old Brown, he is the owl, and put them on his doorstep. But Nutkin was excessively impertinent in his manners. He was always telling riddles to Old Brown.

"Riddle me, riddle me, rot-tot-tote!
A little wee man in a red, red coat!
A staff in his hand, and a stone in his throat;
If you'll tell me this riddle, I'll give you
a groat."
And so Nutkin kept telling riddles until Old Brown got very tired of it. He was going to skin and eat Nutkin when Nukin pulled very hard and broke his tail. Nutkin doesn't tell riddles anymore!

"The Tale of Two Bad Mice"

Once upon a time there was a very beautiful doll's house; it was red
brick with white windows, and it had real muslin curtains and a front
door and a chimney.

The mice make a terrible mess of the doll house. They got very upset the food was plastic, so they went about tearing up things in the doll house. They took all the feathers out of a bolster and made themselves a feather bed. They proceeded to take items from the doll house to their home. The girls that owned the dollhouse dressed one of the dolls up in a policeman's outfit. But the mice paid them back for everyting they broke and tookwith an old crooked sixpence found under the hearth rug.

"The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher"

Once upon a time there was a frog called Mr. Jeremy Fisher;
he lived in a little damp house amongst the buttercups
at the edge of a pond.

Mr. Jeremy Fisher goes fishing one day to catch some minnows for lunch. He is having company for lunch, Mr. Alderman Ptolemy Tortoise and Sir Isaac Newton. Mr. Jeremy Fisher puts on his macintosh and a pair of old shiny galoshes, he took his rod and basket and sets off to catch some minnows. Instead of catching minnows he catches little Jack Sharp the stickleback, covered with spines! Instead of a nice dish of minnows - they had a roasted rasshopper with lady-bird sauce!

AUSTENLAND

This is also for 100+ Reading Challenge over at J. Kaye's.

Jane Hayes is a seemingly normal young New Yorker, but she has a secret. Her obsession with Mr. Darcy, as played by Colin Firth in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, is ruining her life. No real man can compare.
When a wealthy relative bequeaths her a trip to an English resort catering to Austen-crazed women, Jane's fantasies of meeting the perfect Regency-era gentleman suddenly become realer than she ever could have imagined. Decked out in empire-waist gowns, stripped of her modern appliances, Jane throws herself into mastering Regency etiquette and flirts with gardeners and gentlemen - or maybe even, she suspects, with the actors who are playing them.
It's all a game, Jane knows. And yet the longer she stays, the more her insecrities seem to vanish. Is she about to kick the Austen obsession for good, or could all her dreams actually culminate in a Mr. Darcy of her own?

This is a very funny, witty book. Loved it when she meets up with the gardener. Hopefully will finish it today! Yes, I did finish it today. I really liked the book. I didn't really like the ending. It didn't end the way I thought it would. Although Jane kind of found her Mr. Darcey. But I thought it would be a little more romatic than it was. Oh, well, I guess all's well that ends well.

WHERE ARE YOU TUESDAY AND TEASER TUESDAY

raidergirl over at An adventure in Reading is hosting Where are You Tuesdays and Rebecca over at Just one More Page is hosting Teaser Tuesday. Got a good book to share? Go check these memes out!!

WHERE ARE YOU TUESDAYS

I am at Pembrook Park, Kent, England. I am living a fantasy and looking for my Mr. Darcey. Some of the clothes I am wearing are not very comfortable and I got caught with my cell phone, a big no no!
"Austinland" by Shannon Hale

TEASER TUESDAY

It was gratifying to see the woman go get some me-time, but of course it meant Jane was left alone on the sofa with Sir Templeton and the sloshing noise of his cud. She sat straight in her corset, shut her eyes, and tried to drown out the sticky sound by concentrating on the voices in conversion at the card table.

WHAT ARE YOU READING ON MONDAYS?

J.Kaye has a new feature going at her place, J. Kaye's Book Blog. What Are You Reading On Mondays? You should check this out!

WHAT I READ LAST WEEK

"Treasure Island" by Robert Louis Stevenson - Pirates and treasure abound in this book. I read this book as a child and loved it. And I loved it this time around.

"Detective" by Arthur Hailey - This was my first book reading of Arthur Hailey. Wonderful murder mystery! The way Mr. Hailey wrote this book was great. He started in the now and went to the past. Which gave you all the info that gets lost along the way. Great Book!

"Airborn" by Kenneth Oppel - This was also a first time read of this author for me. It is about a boy on an airship. Like the air ships they had during the first world war. Only these don't have helium gas. They use something else that doesn't explode or catch fire. It is really like a futuristic book. I really liked it!!

"In The Hands of The Goddess" by Tamora Pierce - This is a series I am reading. This is book 2 of 4. About Alanna who wants to be a Knight. She disguises herself as a boy and takes all the training to be a knight. Plus throw in some magic/sorcery and some mystery and some love. Great Book!!

WHAT I AM READING THIS WEEK

"A Good House" by Bonnie Burnard - I have just started this book, it looks like it will be pretty good. It starts in 1949 in Stonebrook, Ontario, home to the Chambers family. This about Bill, whis wife, sylvia, and their three children. This book covers 50 years of their life, the troubles, happiness, and all that goes with a family.

"JPod" by Douglas Coupland - This book did not interest me at all, why I got it I don't know. I have set it aside and will try something else.

"Austenland" by Shannon Hale - Ever have an obsession? This book is about Jane Hayes's obsession with Jane Austin hero Mr. Darcey and finding her Mr. Darcey. Looks good so far!

"An Abundance of Katherines" by John Green - I've tried to read this book, but just can't seem to. But am giving it another try. We'll see!

WHAT KIND OF READER ARE YOU?

I found this book test over at J. Kaye's and decided to take the quiz. Want to try? Go ahead you know you to, try it!

ALANNA AND IN THE HAND OF THE GODDESS

These 2 books are for a reading challenge I am doing, Series Challenge Season 3.

"Alanna, The First Adventure" by Tamora Pierce

Product Description(from Amazon.Com)
"From now on I'm Alan of Trebond, the younger twin. I'll be a knight."
And so young Alanna of Trebond begins the journey to knighthood. Though a girl, Alanna has always craved the adventure and daring allowed only for boys; her twin brother, Thom, yearns to learn the art of magic. So one day they decide to switch places: Disguised as a girl, Thom heads for the convent to learn magic; Alanna, pretending to be a boy, is on her way to the castle of King Roald to begin her training as a page.
But the road to knighthood is not an easy one. As Alanna masters the skills necessary for battle, she must also learn to control her heart and to discern her enemies from her allies.
Filled with swords and sorcery, adventure and intrigue, good and evil, Alanna's first adventure begins -- one that will leard to the fulfillment of her dreams and the magical destiny that will make her a legend in her land.
Alanna's journey continues...

"In the Hand of the Goddess" by Tamora Pierce

(From the back cover)
Still disguised as a boy, Alanna becomes a squire to none other than the prince of the realm. Prince Jonathan is ont only Alanna's liege lord, he is also her best friend - and one of the few who knows the secret of her true identity. And when the Prince's life is thretened by a mysterious sorcerer, it will take all of Alanna's skill, strength, and magical power to protect him - even at the risk of revealing who she really is....
Filled with swords and sorcery, adventure and intrigue, good and evil, Alanna's second adventure continues the saga of a girl who dares to follow her dreams - and the magical destiny that will make her a legend in her land.

I first read Alanna: The First Adventure for a reading challenge. I liked it so much I decided to read the whole series. And I can't believe I forgot to put a review about Alanna up. So it is here now. They are both really wonderful books. I can't wait to get the next one to see if Alanna makes it on her great adventure. By the end of the second book she has gone through the ordeal and is now a Knight. Her identity as a girl has also been revealed. There is lots of sword fighting and magic in these books. I think I like them because I love historical books, especially set in the time period of Knights and Ladies, Kings and Queens. Although this series of books is set in a fantasy time period it has lots of history, Knights, Kings and Queens. If you are looking for a great series of books for your children this would be a great series for boys or girls.

FAVORITE PLACES

If you go to Margot's place, Joyfully Retired, you will see some favorite places she likes. You may want to join in on her weekly feature Favorite Places.

A few years ago my hubby and I went to Mackinac Island. We had always wanted to go there. The thought of going across that bridge scared me to death, but off we went. This is a view of the bridge, it is only part of the bridge as I couldn't get all of it in the picture. It is really long!!!! Anyway, here is where you can find all kinds of info on Mackinac Island, it's my favorite place on the web to get info. Wikipedia of course!

Since you can't drive to the island, you have to take a boat there. This is the boat we took to the island. There are several lines that you can take. I think this is the Arnold boat line that took us. But don't quote me on that, it's been a few years ago, so the memory isn't as good as it used to be! LOL

There are so many places to visit once you get to the island, but you can't drive, you have to take a horse and buggy. They have drivers, so no, you don't have to learn a new skill!!

I will show you one place this week and maybe I'll be doing the rest of the places later. OK Of course while your there you need to visit the fort.

That's it for now, I'll show you some more next week, OK.

SATURDAY REVIEW

Sherry over at Semicolon is hosting the Saturday Review. Have a review or two of a book this week, then hop over to Sherry's place and check out all the reviews!

I have 3 books I reviewed this week.

"Detective" by Arthur Hailey

Det. - Sgt. Malcolm Ainslie and Miami Homicide Squad are involved in trying to solve a serial killing. He gets a phone call from the person convicted of two of these murders. The person, Doil, wants to speak to Sgt. Ainslie just 8 hours before his execution. After speaking to Doil, Sgt. Ainslie discovers one murder was a copy cat murder. They then have to figure out who the killer(s) were. This is a very good book! My first Arthur Hailey book. And I really do like his form of writing. He takes you through the past, the present and the now. So that you have all the info about this case.

"Treasure Island" by Robert Louis Stevenson

I read this book when I was a child, which was a few years ago, and loved it then. And I still loved it now! If you like pirates, sea voyages, adventure and a mystery you will love this book.

It all starts when a seaman comes to the 'Admiral Benbow' inn. The seaman brought with him his sea chest and the contents unknown at the time by anyone. Jim Hawkins is the boy in this story and he is telling the story. After some time the seaman has some visitors that want his sea chest and what is in it. He gives Jim the message that if anything happens to him to take his sea chest. Some men (pirates) come for the seaman and he is killed. Jim gets the sea chest and it's contents and takes it to Dr. Livesey and Squire Trelawney. They open it and find a map of an island. This starts the adventure to Treasure Island.

Wonderful classic book that I personally think every child should read!

"Airborn" by Kenneth Oppel

Matt Cruse is a cabin boy on the Aurora, a huge airship that sails hundreds of feet above the ocean, ferrying wealthy passengers from city to city. It is the life Matt's always wanted; convinced he's lighter than air, he imagines himself as buoyant as the hydrium gas that powers his ship. One night he meets a dying balloonist who speaks of beautiful creatures drifting through the skies. It is only after Matt meets the balloonist's granddaughter that he realizes that the man's ravings may, in fact, have been true, and that the creatures are completely real and utterly mysterious.

Wonderful book!! I was a little skeptical when I read the above paragraph on the back of the book. It sounded a lot like a fantasy. I'm not really too found of those kind of books. But I kept reading and got hooked! The writing is very good and is very descriptive. I felt like I was aboard the Aurora! The beautiful creatures seem all too real. The time frame of this book could be from the past or the future.
