REVIEW - "B" IS FOR BURGLER

This book is for 2 of my reading challenges. They are both hosted by J. Kaye, over at her place, J Kaye's Book Blog. Support Your Local Library and
100+ Challenge.

"B" is for Burglar by Sue Grafton

(from the back cover)
Finding wealthy Elaine Boldt seems like a quickie case to Kinsey Millhone. The flashy widow was last seen wearing a $12,000 lynx coat, leaving her condo in Santa Teresa for her condo in Boca Raton. But somewhere in between, she vanished. Kinsey's case goes from puzzling to sinister when a house ie torched, an apartment is burgled or worthless papers, the lynx coat comes back without Elaine, and her bridge partner is found dead. Soon Kinsey's clues begin to form a capital M.....not for missing, but for murder: And plenty of it.

This is a wonderful mystery. You have a burned house, a murder, a missing person, and all kinds of clues that don't add up. What could be better? Kensey does a lot of traveling back and forth from Santa Teresa and Boca Raton. Plus throw in an old woman that can't hear, but hears something that connects the murder and a 17 year old drug dealer that sees something that connects the murderer. It all adds up to a brilliant murder mystery. I can usually guess who the murderer is, but I didn't figure this one out until the last page!!

BOOKING THROUGH THURSDAY AND THURSDAY THUNKS

Deb is hosting Booking through Thursday. Here is the question this week:

Which is worse?

Finding a book you love and then hating everything else you try by that author, or

Reading a completely disappointing book by an author that you love?

I personally think reading a book by an author you love and finding the book is awful is the worse. I think I have read all of Patricia Cornwells books. They were all good and I liked each one. But "At Risk" just wasn't as good as her other ones. It was really disjointed(is that a word). The plot wasn't understandable at all and some of the characters from her previous books have come up missing with no explanation. But this is my opinion. You may like this book! How about you, got a bad book by a loved author?

****************************************************************************************************************************************

Due to me not having men in my life, I have poured everything I have in to education and my career. At 36 I am the youngest (and first female CEO) at a big, successful, tech company. I have over 200 personal patents and millions of pounds in investments.

I have everything: huge house, holiday villa in Spain, 3 cars, power boat, a race horse, etc. but as much I try to talk myself into everything being “great” I cannot help but to miss that special someone to share it all with.

Most of my friends are married with kids and I feel like I am gradually drifting away from them also.

Where can I find someone to marry an ugly woman?

REVIEW - LAST MANGO IN TEXAS

I won this book from Sally over at her place, Book Critique. Sally has lots of book give-a-ways. You should go check her place out. She also has great book reviews, you could get some great ideas for your next book! This is also for several reading challenges, you can see them at the bottom of this post.

"Last Mango in Texas" by Ray Blackston

(from the back cover)
Texas Tech student Kyle Mango is attending a fraternity party when he meets Gretchen, an artsy animal lover whose independent spirit sparks his attention. But after a month of bliss, they suddenly find themselves in rough waters. When Kyle inherits four oil wells from his uncle, he sees his affluence as an opportunity to impress Gretchen. But just before he makes his move, Gretchen joins a group of campus activists to clean oil from suffering birds in Alaska.
Kyle is torn between managing his business and being left lonely in the Lone Star state--and risking everything to fly to Alaska to pursue Gretchen. Kyle soon discovers that oil slicks are nothing compared to relationships slicks. The early bird may get the worm, but the oily bird can ruin romance!

This is a very good book. Sometimes funny, sometimes serious, Kyle's pursuit of Gretchen takes him to the desert of Texas, the coast line of Alaska, a bed and breakfast in France and a small village in Africa. The whole time Kyle is chasing Gretchen he still has his oil wells and they are causing some trouble with his romance of Gretchen. Along the way Kyle picks up an employee for his oil business, it's his room mate from college, Chin. Chin is in charge of Oil Well Development. Chin's job is to find more oil and get the wells developed. Kyle also gets another employee, Sal, who also happens to be a reformed bookie, who also happens to be a well driller. Sal drills wells at Kyle's site and they get 2 more wells going.
Are you still with me? Well, that's all your going to get as I don't want to let the cat out of the bag and ruin the book for you. If you get a chance to read this book, you'll love it!

MY RATING: 5

IT'S TUESDAY, WHERE ARE YOU AND TEASER TUESDAY

Raidergirl is hosting It's Tuesday, Where Are You and MizB is hosting Teaser Tuesday. Hop over and see what all the fuss is about. You'll love it!!

IT'S TUESDAY, WHERE ARE YOU?

I am in the Caribbean, St. Honore at the Golden Palm Hotel. I have a nice little bungalow of my own, with friendly smiling girls to wait on me. An easy path from the bungalow to the sea front and the bathing beach. Where I sit in a comfortable basket chair and watch the bathing. There are also a few elderly guests for company. What more could I want?

TEASER TUESDAY

* Grab your current read
* Open to a random page
* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers! ;)

IT'S MONDAY, WHAT ARE YOU READING? AND MONDAY MUSING

I thought I would try to do both of these memes. I like them both and I have a really hard time trying to decide which one to do. Got any suggestions on how to do this? Let me know!

J. Kaye is hosting What are You Reading? and Rebecca is hosting Musing Mondays. You should really check these out. They are both so interesting!!

So what am I reading? "Last Mango in Texas" by Ray Blackston is my current read. I am almost done with this one. It's pretty interesting. And it's NON-FICTION...I always have trouble trying to remember which is which on this question. Fiction or Non-Fiction. Had to go google it to find out. Found this great place to give me the explanation. FICTION: Books that are not true or made up by the author
NON-FICTION: Are true or about real things, people, events and places.
Seems simple enough, but it confuses me, it seems it should be the other way around!

The Musing Monday question is about this subject:

"Do you read non-fiction regularly? Do you read it in a different way or place than you read fiction?"

I like FICTION lots more than NON-FICTION. If I am reading a NON-FICTION book it usually takes me longer to read it. And don't ask why, I don't know. If I'm reading a FICTION book and it's really good I can usually read it in a couple days! For instance, James Patterson books go really fast!

All of my books that am going to be reading the next couple of weeks will be FICTION:

"The Woman Who Rides Like a Man" by Tamora Pierce
"Lioness Rampant" by Tamora Pierce
"Coraline" by Neil Gaiman
"Riders of the Purple Sage" by Zane Grey
"The Caribbean Mystery" by Agatha Chrisie
"G is for Gumshoe" by Sue Grafton
"Everlasting" by Kathlean Woodiwiss

BOOK REVIEW.......WORLD WITHOUT END

This book is for 3 of my reading challenges. 100+ Challenge, Chunkster Challenge and A to Z Challenge.

First off, this was a really loooong book!! Over a 1000 pages. But well worth it! So hopefully I can get back on track with my other challenges.

"World Without End" by Ken Follett

(INSIDE FLAP)

On the day after Halloween, in the year 1327, four children slip away from the cathedral city of Kingsbridge. They are a thief, a bully, a boy genius and a girl who wants to be a doctor. In the forest they see two men killed.
As adults, their lives will be braided together by ambition, love, greed and revenge. They will see prosperity and famine, plague and war. One boy will travel the world but come home in the end; the other will be a powerful, corrupt nobleman. One girl will defy the might of the medieval church; the other will pursue an impossible love. And always they will live under the long shadow of the unexplained killing they witnessed on that fateful childhood day.

This is a remarkable book Mr. Follett has written. Why, because it is so detailed in history and he lets your imagination roam and visualize the whole book while you are reading. All four of the children, Gwenda, Ralph, Merthin, and Caris are all connected by blood, marriage, or friendship.
As they all grow into adulthood and go on with their lives, they are all still together. Caris and Merthin are in love but can't be together because of trouble with the church. Gwenda loves someone she can't have but does eventually get the guy. And Ralph gains his highest ambition of becoming the Earl of Shiring.
The one thing that binds them all together is the fact that they all witnessed the murder in the forest. As war and breaks out between England and France, Ralph goes to war with the king. Merthin leaves to travel the world. And then the plague comes home to Kingsbridge, wiping out almost the whole town. As the town begins to rebuild and grow, Gwenda, Ralph, Merthin, and Caris all come together for a final time and all coming back to the murders they saw in the forest.

SOME RECENT COMMENTS

As I am still busy reading "World Without End" by Ken Follett. So thought I would make a post about some comments I received this week.

This comment is from Mishel:

This was from my post of Thursday Thunks.
"haha I love how you didn't want either a snake or a lizard but listed sean and rod!
And I love the picture of the calla lily on your calendar 8)"

I was over at Carrie's place last week end and found this great list of movies. So I decided to post about it and see how many of the movies I have seen. I have seen 63 out of 100 movies on the list. One of the comments I got was from Scrap Girl.

"If I add these to teh 1001 books to read before I die and to my personal list of 40 things to do before I am forty - I feel I might be a wee bit busy! great list."

Margot over at Joyfully Retired has a weekly feature called Favorite Places. I posted about one of my favorite places. This is what Margot had to say:

"What a great Favorite Place post. My granddaughter (in Portland, OR) and I go to Michaels when we can. They have some classes for children that she just loved.
I am not a scrapbooker. My money drain is knitting and quilting. My hands don't work well for quilting any more but I still have the fabric, the books, the gadgets and the half-done projects. Knitting I can still do.
Thanks for playing along today. Hope you have a happy week."

I am doing the Blog Improvement Project over at Kim's place Sophisticated Dorkiness. My post for this week was about comments and how to improve them. This is what Inkpot had to say about my post.

"Hi Sherrie
I love the templates on your blogs, they are very nice. :)
I like it when the blog author replies or acknowledges the comments on a post. It means I am more likely to revisit or follow their blog and it shows that they care about your comments and read them.
Anyway, good luck getting more comments!"

That's my wrap up of comments this week. Did you get any great comments this week? Let me know in your comment!

Coming towards the end of April, we’re a third of the way through the year. What’s the favourite book you’ve read so far in 2009? What about your least favorite?

I have two favorites so far. Actually I have liked most of the books I have read this year so far. With a few exceptions! The two I am picking today are "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd. Loved the book and the movie!! The other one is "Until You" by Beatrice Small. That would make a great movie!

My least favorite is "Middlesex" by Jeffery Eugenides. I know lots of folks have liked this book, but I just could not get into this book for some reason. Maybe I'll try again later in the year and see what happens.

Have you got a favorite book so far this year? Or do you have one that you just couldn't read?

FAVORITE PLACES

Margot over at Joyfully Retired is having here weekly feature Favorite Places. Have you got a favorite place to share? Go on over to Margot's and check it out!!

I am a scrapbooker! Yes, I'm guilty of the past time, hobby, craft, or money grab, whatever you want to call it! A few friends and I went on a scrapbook trip a few years ago. We went to Indy, for those that don't know it, Indy is short for Indianapolis. Now you know why we all say Indy, much easier to spell! Nancy took us all in her van.

We went to several scrapbook stores. Even went to Micheal's. That's the biggest craft store I ever saw!! They have anything your crafty heart could desire!!

We had a wonderful time on our trip. At our last stop, the lady at the store offered to take our photo! This is all of us. From left to right: Me, Lynette, Jenny and Nancy! We had a nice lunch and then we came home. It wasn't so much the trip as the time together doing something we all really enjoyed!!

Where's your favorite place? Do you scrapbook? What's your favorite medium? Chalk, Paint, Brads, Stickers or do you do digital scrapbook?

BLOG IMPROVEMENT PROJECT - WEEK 8(LEAVING COMMENTS)

Kim over at Sophisticated Dorkiness is the host for the Blog Improvement Project. Go check her blog out. She has all kinds of things to learn about improving your blog!

These past 2 weeks were given this assignment:

Week #7 is going to be all about making your blog more comment friendly. During the goal setting project (Week #1), a lot of people made it a goal to leave more blog comments. This is important, but I think it’s also vital that once you get a new reader at your blog it’s easy for them to engage with you by commenting on your posts. Don’t worry, Week #8 will more specifically address that because it’s going to be about leaving better comments.

Kim gave us several places to check out for info and suggestions for getting more comments. I went here to get some suggestions. Darren Rose at Problogger has “10 Techniques to Get More Comments on Your Blog.” Some of his suggestions include inviting readers to comment, leaving your posts open ended, setting a clear comment policy, and reward commenters. Again, read the post to go through the suggestions in detail — it’s really good.

I was trying Numbers 1, 2, and 4 on his list.

1. Invite Comments - I thing I have my comment section pretty easy to make a comment. But I have rephrased my comment to you when you make a comment.
2. Ask Questions - I have been trying to do this one in all my posts. But sometimes I forget! I guess it's something I need to work on.
4. Interact with comments left - This means to use your comment box to chat with folks when they come by your blog. But I'm not sure about that one. Do you come back and check out a comment you've made? I usually don't, why you might ask, my problem is I don't remember where I've been and who's blog I made a comment on! I would have sticky notes all over my desk to remind me!

As for keeping track of my comments, well I did that for the last 2 weeks. I have had 42 comments the last 2 weeks, which is good, don't get me wrong, I like getting comments. Some days there weren't any comments. My best comments came with the meme Booking Through Thursday, Teaser Tuesday and It's Tuesday, Where are you? So I guess that's my Blog Improvement for this two weeks. I'll just have to remember to use more questions in my postings! Have any questions about this post? Ask away!!!
