"Goodbye, Vietnam" by Gloria Whelan
Product Description(Amazon.com)
"When Mai's family discovers that Vietnam government soldiers will soon apprehend her father and grandmother, the family slips away in the night. They trudge through the swamps of the Mekong Delta toward the sea. The gut-wrenching trip to Hong Kong is just another step toward a new life, which the family eventually finds. Whelan's characters are distinctive, and her story is riveting, haunting, and memorable, reflecting the human virtues of determination, hope, love, and courage in the face of the most devastating of circumstances and injustices."--Booklist.

MY THOUGHTS: Have you ever been so afraid someone would come and get you or your family in the middle of the night? I haven't, but Mai has. So the whole family packs up and runs to a little town that will put them on a boat to Hong Kong. But once they get there the boat is so full of people they don't know if they will all fit. They set off in this tiny boat full of people. The boat breaks down several times and they drift on the ocean. But Mai's father is a mechanic and fixes the boat. Once they are in Hong Kong they are placed in an immigration camp waiting for a sponsor. Luckily Mai has a cousin in America. Do Mai and her family get to America? You'll have to read the book to find out.
MY RATING: 8 - 12

This book is new to me - thanks for linking it up to the Immigrant Stories Challenge!
After a visit to Vietnam a few years ago, I became interested in all the stories of families who were forced to flee the country - I think I would enjoy this book.
