I haven't done a Just Me feature for ages. So since it's Thursday and I don't have anything to post, yea that's right, not reviews today, thought I would just ramble a bit. This is the last day of June and half of the year is already gone. Wow, where did it go? It seems the older I get the faster time goes.
As for reading, June was an exceptional month for reading for me. I've read and reviewed 23 books this month. Wow, I can't believe that. But I'm not fibbing, it really was 23. Here's my list.
A Murder is Announced - Agatha Christie
A Time of Terror - James Cameron
Behind the Yellow Tape - Jarrett Hallcox
Chicken A La King & The Buffalo Wing - Steven Gilbar
Dearest Enemy - Nan Ryan
Dreams in the Golden Country - Katharyn Lasky
Here Lies Arthur - Phillip Reeve
How To Slay A Dragon - Bill Allen
If I Live To Be 100 - Neenah Ellis
Images of America Fairmount - Cathy Duling Shouse
Love, Aubrey - Suzanne LeFleur
Masterpiece - Elise Broach
Murder on Gallitin Street - David M. Payne
Old-Time Pickling and Spicing Recipes - Florence Brobeck
Rachael Ray Food Entrepreneur - Dennis Abrams
The Branding - Micaela Wendell
The Darkest Evening - William Durbin
The Double Comfort Safari Club - Alexander McCall Smith
The Dragon's Child - Laurence Yep
The Perfect Hamburger - Alexander McCall Smith
The Promises She Keeps - Erin Healy
Un Lun Dun - China Mieville
Wild Bill Donovan - Douglas Waller
Whew that's a lot of books. They are all listed on my side bar and linked to my reviews. They are also in My Library tab at the top of the page. They are in alphabetical order by author.
I also finished 4 reading challenges this month.
Young Readers Challenge
The Foodie Challenge
Immigrants Stories Challenge
Home Town Challenge
So I guess June was a pretty productive month. Who knows what will happen in July. That's it for now, I'm off to the library. My library will be closing for the long 4th of July weekend this evening. So have to make a run today. As if I really need books! I've got enough laying around here to last forever, well not forever, but a while anyway.

REVIEW - MASTERPIECE
This book is for 2 of my reading challenges.
Outdo Yourself Challenge(90/200)
Young Readers Challenge(Wrap-up)
MY THOUGHTS: What do you get when you have a boy, a beetle and ink? You get a mixed up mystery of art theft. Marvin is a beetle that lives in James Pompaday's house under the kitchen sink. Marvin lives there with all his family. He knows James's family very well. On James's birthday, Marvin decides to give James's something. But he can't figure out what. He decides on a buffalo nickel he found. Marven carries the nickel to James's room. When he gets there he sees James's ink and pen on the desk and decides to draw a picture for James. This begins a journey that James and Marvin will continue together. The picture is believed to be James's drawing and leads to James "drawing" a copy of a masterpiece of Albrecht Durer's miniature pictures. But of course it was really Marvin who drew this picture. This all leads to a picture theft. Marvin and James have to find these masterpiece's and return them without anyone knowing that Marvin is the one who did all the work of finding them. Which leads to a really big whopper of a lie by James. Do they find the Masterpiece drawings? Do they catch the thief? You'll have to read the book to find out.

Product Description(Amazon.com)
Marvin lives with his family under the kitchen sink in the Pompadays’ apartment. He is very much a beetle. James lives with his family in New York City. He is very much an eleven year-old boy. After James gets a pen and ink set for his birthday, Marvin surprises him by creating an elaborate miniature drawing. Then James ends up with all the credit, and is expected to do it again. Before they know it, the unlikely friends are caught up in an art heist that could lead them to a long-lost drawing by Albrecht Dürer. Of course, James can’t go through with the plan without Marvin’s help. But can a boy take a beetle to a museum and let him recreate a master work of art without anyone knowing about it? Even more important, can he bring the beetle safely back home?

NEEDLEWORK TUESDAY
Heather over at Books and Quilts has a feature every week called Needlework Tuesday. She shows her awesome quilts and invites other needlework folks to share their work.
I finished the green doily last week and started a new one. It comes from the same book. A Year of Doilies Book 5 by Leisure Arts. I am now up to April. I have set myself a goal to do all the doilies in this book. Maybe not this year but next year for sure. So you are going to be seeing lots of doilies for awhile.
See that pretty lavender one in the lower left hand picture, that's the one I'm working on. I've just started it this past week so haven't gotten very much done on it yet. Just the basic middle. The design hasn't started yet.

ROOTS SUMMER READ-A-LONG
Book Snob and Book Snob Wannbe are hosting this read-a-long.
Read-A-Long Week #2
Pages read: 99-180
Chapters read: 24-38
I got a late start on reading this week. I have about 20 more pages to read to finish my 100 pages. I will finish them tonight.
What I have read so far.
Roots by Alex Haley
Kunta finishes his Manhood Trail and is now a man of the village. He is given his own hut and farm plot. Kunta is feeling a little restless and decides to take a trip with his brother Suwadi. They are visiting some young men Kunta met along the trail to his village. The visitors are going to the gold fields and invites Kunta along. Kunta is also allowed to sit in on the council meetings. He hears lots of cases brought to the elders of the tribe. It's like our judicial system.
One night Kunta is on patrol of his village. This is one of his new jobs as a man now. After he finishes he goes to a bolong to get some wood for a drum he wants to make. While he is there he is viciously attacked and taken prisoner by the toubob (white people) and taken to a camp and branded, shackled and put on a ship. The agony these people go through is astounding. It amazes me that any of them lived. I am at the part of the book where all the people on the ship, there are about 60 of them crammed into little shelves, three to a shelf. They are starting to talk to each other and are trying to come up with a plan to attack the toubob.
The heart breaking news that someone on the ship knows of his disappearance from his village and relays this along to Kunta. He now knows that his family is mourning for him. So much of this part of the book is missing from the t.v series. I have enjoyed reading about Kunta's village life.

REVIEW - RACHAEL RAY: FOOD ENTREPRENEUR
This book is for 3 of my reading challenges.
Outdo Yourself Challenge(89/200)
Foodie Challenge(Wrap Up)
52 Books in 52 Weeks(Wk.26)
MY THOUGHTS: This is a very interesting book filled with lots of info about Rachael Ray and rise to stardom. Did you know she hasn't had any formal cooking training? I didn't, I thought she had been to chef schools. She has also been ridiculed for not having any formal schooling. Did you also know she had been mugged and gun whipped in New York? She survived but she soon moved back to her home in Massachusetts. If you want to know how she got her show on The Food Network, you'll have to read the book.

"Rachael Ray: Food Entrepreneur" by Dennis Abrams
(from back cover)
When one of her recipes calls for "EVOO," cooks knowingly reach for the extra-virgin olive oil. When she declares a dish "Yum-O," those who have tried her meals can nod in agreement. Rachael Ray grew up surrounded by great restaurant cooks, so cooking was a natural and integral part of her life. She first began cooking at home with her mother, moved on to performing cooking demonstrations at local food markets, and finally ended up making successful cooking shows for television. How did an untrained cook who grew up in small-town, upstate New York go on to become one of the Food Network's biggest stars? Perhaps most intriguingly, what role has she played in America's ongoing food revolution? Rachael Ray tells the story of a woman who has made a career of encouraging others to cook, eat, and love food as much as she does. From her catalog of cookbooks to her line of cookware, Ray has become a powerful force in food education.

REVIEW - BEHIND THE YELLOW TAPE
This book is for 4 of my reading challenges.
Outdo Yourself Challenge(88/200)
The 50 States(Tennessee)
A - Z Challenge(Y)
Color Coded Challenge(Yellow)
MY THOUGHTS: Do you watch the CSI shows on t.v.? I do and I am a true addict of crime shows. My hubby asks why I watch the gory things. It's not so much the blood and guts I watch it's the process they go through to find the bad guy. So when I saw this book at the library, I couldn't resist. It's a very different CSI from the Hollywood ones I watch. There aren't any electroic gadgets, fancy DNA that works seemingly in seconds, or gun toting police chasing down the bad guys. These CSI's work in the worst conditions. Cold, Heat, Rain and Snow. They have to wait months even years for DNA reports. And they don't chase down the bad guys. This is a very informative book. So if your looking for the "real" CSI's this is the book to read.

FRIDAY FAVORITES
Freda over at Freda's Voice hosts The Friday 56 and Katy over at A Few More Pages hosts Book Beginnings. Hop over and check them out. You could find your next book there.
Both my Friday 56 and Book Beginnings are coming from an ARC I'm reading.
The Promises She Keeps - Erin Healy
Synopsis
THE FRIDAY 56
P. 56
Chase sensed Wes come and sit beside him. Wes was Chase's friend and helper who came to the house most weekdays while Chelsea was away.
BOOK BEGINNINGS
In the silence of night, sounds of life have a greater chance of being heard.
One of these sounds woke Chase Ellis from deep sleep at a heavy predawn hour. His rousing was sudden and full, so that without any bleary transition he found himself aware of this own thoughts. He lay on his back under a rhythmic ceiling fan. The blades made their circuit and caused the fan's light chain to tink against a glass globe. This familiar noise usually rocked his mind into reast. Something else had disrupted him.
What grabbed me on this first paragraph was the sounds the writer is describing. They are everyday sounds we don't really pay much attention to, but this guy hears them. What's going on that he wakes up so alert to these sounds?
Make sure you head over to Freda's and Katy's places.

"The Dragon's Child" by Laurence Yep
Product Description(Amazon.com)
Did you want to go to America?
Pop: Sure. I didn't have a choice. My father said I had to go. So I went.
Were you sad when you left your village?
Pop: Maybe a little . . . well, maybe a lot.
Ten-year-old Gim Lew Yep knows that he must leave his home in China and travel to America with the father who is a stranger to him. Gim Lew doesn't want to leave behind everything that he's ever known. But he is even more scared of disappointing his father. He uses his left hand, rather than the "correct" right hand; he stutters; and most of all, he worries about not passing the strict immigration test administered at Angel Island.
The Dragon's Child is a touching portrait of a father and son and their unforgettable journey from China to the land of the Golden Mountain. It is based on actual conversations between two-time Newbery Honor author Laurence Yep and his father and on research on his family's immigration history by his niece, Dr. Kathleen S. Yep.

MY THOUGHTS: This is a really good book from a new author and a young one at that. Her writing takes you into the world of Morwen and the Elfin world of Aren. As people Morwen loves keeps disappearing into the forrest she is determined to find them at all costs. But what will it cost her? And how will she ever get everything back the way it was? You'll have to read the book to find out. Can't wait for the sequel to come out.

Outdo Yourself Challenge(85/200)
"The Branding" by Micaela Wendell
Product Description(Amazon.com)
Morwen Aleacim, an elfin teen in the village of Aren, has always heard rumors of evil lurking in the great forests of the kingdom, where children vanish. Her own father disappeared into those forests, and Morwen is determined to find him. So she is secretly training to be a warrior-against the strict rules of decorum for girls-with the help of Armando, an aging human swordsman.
When Brynn, Morwen's own baby sister, vanishes, Morwen tracks her to the horrifying lair of Tobias, an inhuman Dark Wizard. There she strikes a deal with him-her service in return for Brynn's freedom.
He accepts. She'll go free along with Brynn for now, but is bound to him as his apprentice. To her horror, Tobias brands her-not with a fiery mark, but with a spell that will slowly transform her human body into a grotesque creature and her spirit into an obedient slave. When the transformation is complete she'll have no choice but to return to him forever.
Aided by Alan, a handsome elfin boy, who will soon have a dark challenge of his own, Morwen sets out to find a wizard who can lift the spell. It's a race against time as she struggles to free her mind, body, spirit and heart from a horrible fate.
Micaela Wendell, now sixteen years old, has been writing since her early childhood. She began work on THE BRANDING in seventh grade. Micaela lives in South Carolina, where she's an honors student involved in many activities. She's already working on a sequel to THE BRANDING.

REVIEW - LOVE, AUBREY
This book is for 3 of my reading challenges.
Outdo Yourself Challenge(84/200)
The 50 States Challenge(Vermont)
Young Readers Challenge
MY THOUGHTS: Have you ever picked up a book, read a few pages, and think your not going to like this? This was one of those books. But kept on reading and got so into the story and the characters that I couldn't put it down for long. It is beautifully written and all flows together. Aubrey's family is in a car accident and her father and sister are killed. Her mother kind of looses it and can't seem to cope. She just disappears one day and Aubrey is left alone. Aubrey's grandmother comes to get her and takes her home to Vermont. There Aubrey makes new friends, goes to school and learns to cope with her feelings. Her mom is back in Virgina seeing a doctor and getting better. All through the book are scattered letters of Aubrey writes but never mails. They are like a journal of her feelings. Then Aubrey's mother comes back to get her. Aubrey has to make a big decision. What is the decision? You'll have to read the book to find out.

52 Books in 52 Weeks(Wk.25)
MY THOUGHTS: I got this from a fellow book club person. She really liked this book. She loaned it to me to read. I wasn't too sure I would like it when I started the book. But the more I read the more I wanted to know. The book is written of stories of people who are 100 or over in age. These people are amazing. Anna for instance still rows her little boat every morning. This is my favorite story in the book. The author asks...

"Anna, what do people have to look forward to, being a hundred years old?"It sounds so simple but if you think about it, it makes perfect sense. I really enjoyed reading this book.
"Well, the only thing I can say is, Don't sit. Get going. Move. Have an incentive. Don't keep thinking 'I'm old.' Get it out of your system. Keep going! I don't stay put. That's it."

NEEDLEWEEK TUESDAY
I've finally finished the doily I was working on. It's from a book I got a Michael's a few years ago. It's called A Year of Doilies, Book 5 by Leisure Arts. And believe it or not but Amazon.com has it listed at their place. That surprised me. I've linked it so you can check it out.
Finished Doily(for March)
Up next is the April doily. It's a very pretty lavender, I'll have to go to Joann's or Wal Mart to find some as I don't have any lavender thread.
Needlework Tuesday is a feature hosted by Heather over at Books and Quilts. She shares her needlework and others that join her. We all give encouragement to each other. Head over and check it out. I've made a little button for this. Heather doesn't have one. She's welcome to use this one.

SERIAL FEATURE
I got an email the other day from Regina Koyfman, Regina works with Planned Television Arts. She wanted me to review a book called Driftwood Cottage by Sherryl Woods. She also asked me if I wanted to DO a serial review of the series, Chesapeake Shores. I thought they sounded like a great series so I said yes. I'm setting up this as a bi-monthly feature here at Just Books. I will be reading these books and letting you all know how I'm doing. As I'm a kind of person who likes to start a series from the beginning, I'm going to be getting the first 4 books in the series from my library. These are the books that are in the series.
Book 1 The Inn At Eagle Point
Book 2 Flowers on Main
Book 3 Harbor Lights
Book 4 A Chesapeake Shores Christmas
Book 5 Driftwood Cottage
Book 6 Moonlight Cove
Book 7 Beach Lane
I've linked them all to Amazon.com if you want to read about them. I will be putting them on my sidebar too. I'll link it to this post so anyone can check it out.
