"Tales From Outer Suburbia" by Shaun Tan
Product Description(Amazon.com)
An exchange student who's really an alien, a secret room that becomes the perfect place for a quick escape, a typical tale of grandfatherly exaggeration that is actually even more bizarre than he says... These are the odd details of everyday life that grow and take on an incredible life of their own in tales and illustrations that Shaun Tan's many fans will love.
Reading level: Ages 9-12
Hardcover: 96 pages
Publisher: Arthur A. Levine Books (February 1, 2009)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0545055873
ISBN-13: 978-0545055871

MY THOUGHTS: As I was going thought my library data base looking for a book about Australia, this one stood out. And once I got the book home, I read it. It's only 96 pages, but those 96 pages are filled with great stories and awesome pictures. My library has this categorized as a Young Adult book, but I think it should be in the children's section. There are 12 stories and they are all told wonderfully with pictures. My favorite is Stick Figures. It's a different version of Telephone poles. Very cute story and a way I never thought of them. If you haven't read this book, please do, it's an awesome book full of exciting stories and great pictures.

"The Mysterious Affair At Styles" by Agatha Christie
Product Description(Amazon.com)
The heiress of Styles has been murdered, dying in agony from strychnine slipped into her coffee. And there are plenty who would gain from her death: the financially strapped stepson, the gold digging younger husband, and an embittered daughter-in-law.

Agatha Christie's eccentric and hugely popular detective, Hercule Poirot, was introduced to the world in this book, which launched her career as the most famous and best loved of all mystery writers.
Paperback: 124 pages
Publisher: Deodand Publishing (October 21, 2002)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0646418432
ISBN-13: 978-0646418438

MY THOUGHTS: This book is full of twists and turns. Lots of suspects. And as usual I picked the wrong one. Mr. Hastings is telling the story, he's just come home from the Front and runs into John Cavendish. John invites him to stay at Styles for some relaxation and rest. Which turns out to be not relaxing. Mrs.Inglethorp is murdered. By chance a friend of Mr. Hastings is living in the village, Mr. Poirot. He is a former Belgian detective. Mr. Hastings asks Mr. Poirot to look into the case. Mrs. Inglethorp is found in her room with locked and bolted doors. Does Mr. Poirot solve the case? Who done it? You'll have to read the book to find out.

REVIEW - ZERO DAY

This book is for 1 of my reading challenges.
Outdo Yourself Challenge(130/200)

"Zero Day" by Mark Russinovich
Product Description(Amazon.com)
An airliner’s controls abruptly fail mid-flight over the Atlantic. An oil tanker runs aground in Japan when its navigational system suddenly stops dead. Hospitals everywhere have to abandon their computer databases when patients die after being administered incorrect dosages of their medicine. In the Midwest, a nuclear power plant nearly becomes the next Chernobyl when its cooling systems malfunction.
At first, these random computer failures seem like unrelated events. But Jeff Aiken, a former government analyst who quit in disgust after witnessing the gross errors that led up to 9/11, thinks otherwise. Jeff fears a more serious attack targeting the United States computer infrastructure is already under way. And as other menacing computer malfunctions pop up around the world, some with deadly results, he realizes that there isn’t much time if he hopes to prevent an international catastrophe.
Written by a global authority on cyber security, Zero Day presents a chilling “what if” scenario that, in a world completely reliant on technology, is more than possible today---it’s a cataclysmic disaster just waiting to happen.
Hardcover: 336 pages
Publisher: Thomas Dunne Books (March 15, 2011)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 031261246X
ISBN-13: 978-0312612467

MY THOUGHTS: Several seemingly unrelated incidents take place all over the world, all involving computer failures. Zero Day involves a very realistic portrayal of cyber-terrorism. There is only one man for this job. Jeff Aiken is the man they call. Jeff has to figure out what's going on and fix it. Can he do it? Does he do it? You'll have to read the book to find out.

REVIEW - A STUDY IN SCARLET

This book is for 2 of my reading challenges.
Outdo Yourself Challenge(128/200)
Vintage Mystery Challenge

"A Study in Scarlet" by Arthur Conan Doyle
Product Description(Amazon.com)
A Study in Scarlet was Sherlock Holmes' first outing into the literary world. Published in 1887 (after many rejections) it was an immediate success. Conan Doyle's quirky hero, with his cold deductive mind, violin playing and cocaine addiction, fascinated the reading public, and laid the foundation for the many Sherlock Holmes books and short stories that were to follow over the next three decades. In this first work, all the winning ingredient of a Holmes novel appear fully-formed: a murder, puzzling clues, evil villains, startling locations and an elegant, surprising solution provided in typical laconic style by the arch-sleuth himself.
Paperback: 106 pages
Publisher: Aziloth Books (August 31, 2010)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1907523324
ISBN-13: 978-1907523328

MY THOUGHTS: I must admit I haven't read but 1 of Arthur Conan Doyle's books. I really liked this one. All the ingredients were there for a great mystery. A mysterious murder with no signs of a weapon. A word in blood on the wall...RACHE. Which everyone took to mean Rachel, but of course it wasn't. Everyone is baffled by it all. But in comes Sherlock Holmes. He has the crime solved, now all he has to do is catch the guy. So who done it? I'm not telling, it would ruin this delightful little mystery for you. So read the book, it's really good!

YA Historical Fiction

"The True Adventures of Charley Darwin" by Carolyn Meyer
Product Description(Amazon.com)
Young Charley Darwin hated school—he much preferred to be outside studying birds’ eggs, feathers, and insects. And so, at the age of twenty-one, he boarded a ship called HMS Beagle and spent five thrilling but dangerous years sailing around the world, studying plant and animal life that was beyond anything he could have imagined.
Historical novelist Carolyn Meyer tells the story of his unconventional adventures of the author of the legendary book The Origin of Species. It’s the story of a restless childhood, unrequited teenage love, and a passion for studying nature that was so great, Darwin would sacrifice everything to pursue it.

Publisher: Graphia (February 22, 2011)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0547415648
ISBN-13: 978-0547415642

MY THOUGHTS: I've always thought of Charles Darwin as an old man with grey hair and a beard. But this book gives you a bird's eye view into the young Charley Darwin. This book is about Charley in school, which he hated, and as a young man sailing around the world. What starts our as a voyage of 2 years turns out to be 5 years. He sees things he's never seen before. And he is so sea sick during the voyage. He spends most of his time on ship in his hammock. But once on land Charley is his old self again. Off to find the elusive plant, rock, animal or whatever he finds. If you like reading about history this is the book for you.

Seventy-year-old Percy Darling is settling happily into retirement: reading novels, watching old movies, and swimming naked in his pond. But his routines are disrupted when he is persuaded to let a locally beloved preschool take over his barn. As Percy sees his rural refuge overrun by children, parents, and teachers, he must reexamine the solitary life he has made in the three decades since the sudden death of his wife. With equal parts affection and humor, Julia Glass spins a captivating tale about a man who can no longer remain aloof from his community, his two grown daughters, or—to his great shock—the precarious joy of falling in love.

MY THOUGHTS: This is my book clubs pick for August. This book is rich with the complexities of everyday life. There are 4 men telling their stories, Percy, Robert, Celestino, and Ira. The story line gives you glimpses into relationships, love and self-forgiveness, family loyalty and betrayal. Percy is the only character that is in first person and his story is the title of the book. After 30+ years Percy falls in love. But does it work out? You'll have to read the book to find out. Really great book.

"The Civilized World" by Susi Wyss
Product Description(Amazon.com)
When Adjoa leaves Ghana to find work in the Ivory Coast, she hopes that one day she'll return home to open a beauty parlor. Her dream comes true, though not before she suffers a devastating loss—one that will haunt her for years, and one that also deeply affects Janice, an American aid worker who no longer feels she has a place to call home. But the bustling Precious Brother Salon is not just the "cleanest, friendliest, and most welcoming in the city." It's also where locals catch up on their gossip; where Comfort, an imperious busybody, can complain about her American daughter-in-law, Linda; and where Adjoa can get a fresh start on life—or so she thinks, until Janice moves to Ghana and unexpectedly stumbles upon the salon.
At once deeply moving and utterly charming, The Civilized World follows five women as they face meddling mothers-in-law, unfaithful partners, and the lingering aftereffects of racism, only to learn that their cultural differences are outweighed by their common bond as women. With vibrant prose, Susi Wyss explores what it means to need forgiveness—and what it means to forgive.
Paperback: 256 pages
Publisher: Holt Paperbacks; First Edition, Second Printing edition (March 29, 2011)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0805093621
ISBN-13: 978-0805093629

MY THOUGHTS: This book has nine stories told from the perspective of five female characters. There are plots and subplots in this book. The characters are very clearly presented. The novel provides a snapshot of everyday life in Africa. Revolving around all the characters in the book. Janice, an American working in Africa, Adjoa, a Ghanian who goes to work in the Ivory Coast to raise money to open a beauty salon, and Ophelia, an expatriate who is adjusting to living on another continent. That's just three of the characters. There are several more and they are all interwoven through the beauty salon. Their hopes, dreams and everyday life makes up this book. Very well written and easy to follow along. I really enjoyed reading about the women in this book.

"In My Hands" by Irene Gut Opdyke

MY THOUGHTS: This is an inspiring tale of courage and resistance. It is also the hope-filled story at a time when all hope seems to have disappeared. Above all, this is a story of choices. The people around Irene who make choices to help. It details the life of one seemingly ordinary nursing student who decides to help a Jewish family. Written in a warm and direct style, very personal, it helps you understand WW II and the Holocaust. Do pick this book up and read it. It's a very moving book.

A rich and luminous novel about three generations of women in one family: the love they share, the dreams they refuse to surrender, and the secrets they hold

And she is still mourning another loss: her mother, Iris, died just one year ago.
When a box of Iris's belongings arrives on Sam's doorstep, she discovers links to pieces of her family history but is puzzled by much of the information the box contains. She learns that her grandmother Violet left New York City as an eleven-year-old girl, traveling by herself to the Midwest in search of a better life. But what was Violet's real reason for leaving? And how could she have made that trip alone at such a tender age?

I had just finished reading several heavy books so needed something a little different and this is one of my favorite genres. Emma has been sold to the highest bidder. Her family is about to be kicked out of their house and her father sent to debtor prison. Emma has made the sacrifice so that doesn't happen. But she's stolen from the alter by Jamie Sinclair, an enemy of the man she is marrying. Sinclair takes Emma into the Highland mountains to wait for his ransom. Emma's tries to run away and falls into a ravine and Sinclair has to rescue her. She also gets a gun and tries to shoot Sinclair. But all this is leading to romance. Alyce over at At Home With Books is the host for Saturday Snapshot. Freda over at Freda's Voice is the host of Quote it Saturday. Hop over and check them both out.

Hubby and I were sitting outside and a tree frog hopped on his pants leg. He picked it up and it hopped onto his watch. Luckily I had my camera. This is a Indiana Grey Tree Frog. We have lots of them around here. After a good rain they sing. Most of the time you don't see them, just hear them. They have suckers on their feet so they can hold on to the trees. This one is a juvenile frog. He must have fallen out of the tree we sitting under. We put him back in the tree and he hopped off up the tree. Click on the picture to see up close.

We think too small, like the frog at the bottom of the well. He thinks the sky is only as big as the top of the well. If he surfaced, he would have an entirely different view.

Product Description(Amazon.com)
The heart-wrenching and adventure-filled stories of
a South African wild animal vet and his colleagues
When do you watch a wild animal suffer and let nature take its course, and when do you intervene? In his more than twenty-five years as an African vet, Dr. Roy Aronson has seen and done some remarkable things. He has tracked lions and cheetahs, anesthetized rhinoceroses and king cobras, collared rogue elephants, performed eye surgery on a lion out in the bush, been attacked by a puff adder, come face to face with an angry hybrid wolf, and nearly lost a foot to a crocodile. Dr. Aronson has also worked with some of Africa’s most dedicated conservationists and wildlife veterinarians. He has witnessed their passion and bravery and been with them when hard decisions had to be made.
Tales of an African Vet brings together Dr. Aronson’s adventures in a rare behind-the-scenes look at those who treat wild animals in their natural habitat. MY THOUGHTS: This book is a delightful collection of short stories. The author, Dr. Aronson, has way of writing a story that makes you feel like your are there in the room with him. He fully explains the medical treatments in a way that you understand everything he's doing. Dr. Aronson tells stories from the domestic to the wild animals of Africa. If you have a chance pick this book up and read it. It's really an enjoyable book.
